Had a detail last week calling CJP on 1–1/2 in A572 Gr 50 with E7018, tail reads “CE 0.47, preheat per WPS” but no temperature on the print. I read the blueprint against AWS D1.1 Table 3.2 and set a 225°F minimum preheat, then kept heat input under about 45 kJ/in to protect HAZ toughness; anyone else treating that note the same, or do you push higher preheat to hedge lamellar tear risk when the mill test shows high S and low Z-quality?
With “CE 0.47” on 1–1/2 in A572 Gr 50, 225°F and about 45 kJ/in is my default, but I bump preheat to 250–275°F if restraint is high or ambient is low to hedge HAZ cracking, not lamellar. I also check rolling direction and, when I can, spec Z25/Z35; otherwise keep interpass at or below 300°F with short pauses between passes. I hold 225°F, cap interpass about 300°F, and run stringers; “45 kJ/in” works, @natalie_b19.
