Night TIG class paid off fast

Just wrapped a 6-week night TIG class at my community college, and the lab time on 1/8" aluminum plus feedback from a CWI leveled me up way faster than self-study. I’m an apprentice (8 months in) and showing up early, asking one good question, and swapping numbers got me a Saturday shadow with a fab shop lead. A weekend thin-wall TIG clinic at a local bike framebuilder co‑op leveled me up fast too; I paid $150, learned purge tricks on 0.035‑in 4130, and the instructor later pulled me in for a one‑day stainless tube job — coffee money turned into a paycheck. Quick win for me was a half-day NDT intro at a local lab — hands-on dye pen and mag particle — and it made my CWI feedback click like your 1/8" aluminum lab time, plus it led to a stainless TIG repair tryout the next week… They’re not advertised well, but ASNT chapter events or test labs will point you to the next class; show up early and ask your “one good question” again.

I took a Saturday fixturing/fit‑up workshop at a makerspace; learning a simple “two‑point clamp and bridge‑tack” routine cut my warp on 1/8–3/16 aluminum, and the instructor later lined me up for a bench test at a trailer fab shop. If you can’t find that exact class, a short weld‑symbols refresher at the community college made applying CWI notes way easier.

Piggybacking @gregory56, my local AWS section runs a casual ‘bend night’ — bring two coupons, run them, and a CWI walks you through prep and face/root bends; $10-ish and the one thing that fixed my 1/8" aluminum was keeping tungsten stick-out around 3/16–1/4 in.
