Watched a 5/16 fillet “meet” the WPS by holding the tape at a 30 degrees angle and calling it good. I reminded the crew that structural integrity doesn’t bend with the tape; we cut and re-welded per FCAW WPS-17 at 6:20 a.m. Anyone else collecting these calibration-defying tools, or is it just my site?
Carry a Bridge Cam — ‘30° tape’ lies; verify 5/16 properly, or print a pocket template… Trophy pile yet?
And i stick a tiny magnetic 90° block to my tape hook so it seats square on the plate — kills the ‘30 degrees’ trick and gives a true 5/16 even when we’re sprinting at 6:20 a.m. If someone insists on the tape, I have them bump the mag square against the toe and read it straight.
